Mobile Suit Gundam is an anime series from the Bandai company. It was conceived by Yoshiyuki Tomino and premiered in Japan in 1979. Originally designed for 52 episodes, it was reduced to 39. In the end, 44 episodes were produced, one of which never came on TV because Tomino was dissatisfied with the execution of the graphics.

Plot [edit | Edit source]

The series describes the events that the crew of the battleship "White Base" experienced when they were sometimes more forced than wanted to become soldiers of the Earth Alliance and had to prove themselves in a cruel war.

The focus of the plot is the young Newtype Amuro Ray, who climbs into the cockpit of the prototype of a mobile suit during an attack on his home colony and begins to fight. As he technically gets better at battle, events are leaving deeper and deeper scars on his psyche. His opponent is Char Aznable, an officer from ZEON, known as "the Red Comet", a tactically clever and technically excellent warrior who is arguably the most popular character in the entire Gundam universe.

Design elements [edit | Edit source]

In the 1970s, robot anime like Mazinger Z or Ufo Robot Grendizer were very popular in Japan, but also in the USA and parts of Europe. There was always a practically invincible super robot fighting against evil aliens who attacked with a new plan in each episode and always failed.

The novelty of MSG was that it was the first "real robot series". The combat robot was now nothing more than a machine that needed maintenance, could break and run out of fuel or ammunition. Characters die in the course of the series, including main characters. The fighting soldiers and civilians are often neither good nor bad but fight out of conviction and fear to protect their home and their friends. The enemies also have sympathetic characters and the "good" bad characters.

In the foreground is the war with its cruelty, which forces people to fight against each other, although they do not know or maybe even like each other.

The graphic design of the series is now obsolete, but the plot of the series is still up to date.
