What is your opinion on applied behavior analysis
ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is mostly translated in German with the term applied behavior analysis. First of all I want to work with one scientific definition start:
ABA is a science in which methods derived from the principles of behavior are systematically used to improve behavior that is important to society. Care is taken to ensure that scientific methods are used to identify variables responsible for behavioral changes.
An important goal of applied behavior analysis is to achieve a significant improvement in important behaviors and to analyze the influencing factors. ABA looks back on more than 50 years of scientific research and is continuously expanded with regular studies. ABA goes on behaviorism and B.F. Skinner's (American psychologist and behaviorist) research. In the university sector, ABA is offered as an independent course of study in many countries around the world, and the IFKV Bad Dürkheim has now started the first course in Germany as well.
ABA is used in a wide variety of professional fields, but above all it is repeatedly cited as a very effective support method for children with autism. In many countries, ABA is the most widely used Support approach for children with autism. It is believed that children with autism often have difficulty learning from their environment in the way that other typically developed children do every day, but that they can still make significant learning progress with the right teaching.
These behavior-based intervention in autism focuses on teaching small and measurable behaviors step by step. Complex behaviors, some of which are difficult to learn for the children, are broken down into many small steps that can be taught bit by bit. In this way the children can learn a wide variety of skills, such as social or communication skills.
At the beginning of the support, the lessons usually take place in 1: 1 situations, with the aim that the children can later learn more and more from natural situations and everyday life. When teaching new skills, aids are first used so that the child can cope with the task successfully, but these will be removed as soon as possible.
Reinforcing consequences are used to further strengthen behavior and newly learned skills. Reinforcing consequences look very diverse and are always dependent on the respective child. Various objects (balls, cars, books, music, videos, computers, etc.), activities (trampoline, swings, tickling, romping, massaging, cycling, swimming, etc.) but also primary amplifiers (certain snacks) can be used have a reinforcing character. One of the first and most important tasks is to find possible amplifiers for the child.
One of the most important goals of funding is make learning fun for the childso that he or she has more and more desire to learn new things. Learning can and should take place in a wide variety of situations, so learning situations at home in the children's room, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in the garden or on the playground, in the supermarket or in the swimming pool (and these are just a few examples). All skills should be generalizedso that these become functional for the child. Only when the child can show them repeatedly in different situations, with different people and materials, can they actually benefit from what they have learned.
Behavioral analysis analyzes variables which frequently occurinappropriate behavior (e.g. aggressive behavior, screaming, tantrums, running away, etc.). The goal here is to change the currently sustaining consequences and to teach the child more appropriate alternative behavior. It often helps if the child learns to express his wishes in an appropriate way (e.g. through language, gestures or picture cards).
