How to use Lynda.com for free from your local library

Many universities offer free access to Lynda's large library of educational videos. But for those of us out of school, there is a very easy way to get free access. While you can access Lynda videos on computers in many public libraries in the US and Canada, you can also sign up for a free account and enjoy the videos from the comfort of your home using your library card number.

Lynda costs between $ 19.99 per month and $ 29.99 per month. If your library has free access, You get a lot.

1. Does your public library offer free Lynda access?

The easiest and fastest way to find out if libraries in your district offer free Lynda access is to Google the library name and “Lynda”. You can also search for the term "Lynda" on the library's official website. (Just make sure to search the library website, not its catalog.)

For example, on the Arlington County Library website, type Lynda in the search bar on the home page. Choose Page? ˅ as a search parameter and press Enter.

You will often find that your library has a page with information about the resources, research, or learning tools available to members. You may have to dig a little to find this page if this is your route.

Another very easy way to find out is to either call the library or visit your local library and ask your librarian if Lynda access is available.

If your library doesn't have access to Lynda, you can instead access all of the courses using LinkedIn's premium membership. A premium LinkedIn account costs $ 24.99 per month if billed annually or $ 29.99 if billed monthly. This way you get two services for the price of one. US veterans can access LinkedIn Premium for free.

2. Get a library card

Once you've found out which library near you Lynda has free access, there are a few easy steps to sign up for a library card if you don't already have one. (If you already have a library card, just skip to the next step.)

If you are at the nearest community library, you will likely need to bring two items: photo ID and an email confirming your address.

Photo IDs you can use are:

  • Driving license
  • State issued ID
  • passport
  • School card
  • Voter card

The types of post that confirm your address include:

  • Postmarked mail
  • Bank statement or checkbook
  • Lease contract or mortgage paper
  • Current timetable or certificate
  • Voter card

Be sure to check the library website or give the library a call to make sure you have everything you need before you travel. Some libraries also offer online registration for a temporary 30-day card, which will expire if you don't go to the library in person to complete your application. The information required to register includes your name, address, date of birth and your email address.

The process for registering in person for a card is quick and painless and should take no more than 10 minutes.

When you receive your library card, the librarian will likely ask you to dial a PIN for your local account and will need to sign in to activate your membership.

3. Sign up for Lynda

Once you have your library card (or if you already have it) you can sign up for a free Lynda account online.

Go to Lynda.com and click log in (Not Click the Register button and click the link below: Log into your organization portal.

You will be asked for your organization's URL. In this case, enter the website address of your library. Members of the Arlington County Library will step in, Washington DC library members should step in, and so on.

This will take you to your library's login page, where you'll need to enter your library card number and library PIN to log in.

When you log in for the first time, you will be asked to enter your profile information: first name, last name and email address.

Once you have entered this information, you will have access to all Lynda courses. The next time you log in, you should be automatically taken to your library's login page.

If your library has mobile access, you can also download Lynda's many apps and open the login page. Navigate to organization Tab and scroll down to Internet portal, and where it says Enter your organization's URL to log in to their portal, Enter your library url. Hit the blue log in Button.

4. What you get with your library account

A free library account gives you access to all of Lynda's premium features, most notably offline viewing in its apps and access to exercise files provided by teachers so you can seamlessly follow along.

When you open a course in a specific app, you'll see a download button (a down arrow) next to each segment. Tapping this button will download the video to your device for offline viewing.

Using Lynda apps in offline mode is a great way to take your learning experiences with you. Free apps are available for iOS, Android, Windows, and OS X users. You can also install Lynda on Roku and Apple TV. This is especially useful if you want to use Lynda on your TV for a big screen. You can also cast videos to your TV using Google Chromecast.

When choosing your courses - it all depends on what you want to learn - nothing is prohibited from your library account.

The courses at Lynda are divided into over 200 categories, including design, photography, programming, animation, and more.
