Meditation how long? How long should one meditate a day? Do you have to meditate for the duration of your life? Or how long should you meditate?

How long should one meditate?

When you ask yourself this question, you find that there are many questions in it. Every day? How long should one meditate at all? Do you ever stop meditation?

How long should you meditate? As a beginner, I think it's good to meditate for 15 to 25 minutes once a week and 3 to 7 minutes every day. So it is good, for example, if you have a fixed meditation course in which you meet once a week. If you go there for a meditation class once a week and then meditate for 3 to 7 minutes every day, you will have a good start.

People who want to meditate regularly and who want to go deeper into the spirituality and meditation experience typically meditate for 20 minutes every day. Every day 20 minutes is the basic meditation and maybe a shorter meditation session of 3 to 5 minutes every day. Perhaps it is also good to meditate longer once a week, for example 30 to 40 minutes or 60 minutes.

It is also good, for example, if you are experienced in meditation, to have a phase now and then where you meditate a lot. For example, you can come to Yoga Vidya for a meditation weekend or do a 5-day “meditation-intensive-silent” seminar or retreat. Here you can meditate several times a day for up to several hours. By the way, you have the choice if you want to alternate between doing 20 minutes of sitting, 5 minutes of walking, 20 minutes of sitting and 5 minutes of walking meditation - and to do this several times in a row or to have a longer meditation session. In the long term, it is particularly good to have sat for 2 hours at a time. This intensifies the meditation experience immensely. But every day is enough: 20 minutes for most people.

How long should one continue with meditation then? Can you stop at some point? Yogies would say no. Meditate until you have achieved enlightenment, spiritual awakening - that is how long you have to meditate and then you just stick with it. Because even if you have achieved the great awakening, you come back to normal consciousness afterwards and you have to immerse yourself in God consciousness again every day and for that you need meditation. So how long should you meditate? Up to enlightenment and beyond. Yogies even say that you can continue to meditate on death. It is even easier because the body no longer causes problems. Look forward to it too.
