What happened to Eitri in Avengers Endgame

During the conflict with Thanos, Thor ventured to Nidavellir with Rocket Raccoon and young Groot in 2018 to forge Thor's new weapon. Upon arrival, the typically bustling blacksmiths of Nidavellir were cold and barren, littered with fragments. The initially frightened dwarf king Eitri found himself with his old friend and explained that the dwarfs were almost all killed by the hand of Thanos and the Black Order and that his hands were fused with metal as a result of Thanos' request to forge the Infinity glove .

With the help of Thor and Rocket Raccoon, Eitri re-ignited the dying star and re-ignited the forge, melting Uru blocks down and pouring them into a mold. Then it shattered the shape, revealing the blade and handle of the ax, but the handle could not be attached. Seeing that Thor was near death after being exposed to the power of the dying star, Groot decided that they couldn't wait for Eitri to find or create a metal handle; he grabbed the glowing pieces of metal in one of his arms and then cut off the arm to serve as a handle and completed Stormbreaker in order to. The weapon then revived the remains of Thor, who used his power of Bifrost to go to Wakanda and help the other Avengers there.

Stormbreaker was used to great effect in the Battle of Wakanda, massively increasing Thor's own lightning power. Above all, it was the only weapon that caused Thanos noticeable damage during the entire conflict: Thor even impaled Thanos with it shortly after Thanos had completed the Infinity Glove - however, he purposely aimed at the chest so that he could slowly take revenge on Thanos resulting in Thanos being badly injured and not killed instantly. This proved to be a fatal mistake, as the blow couldn't stop Thanos from activating the Infinity Glove, wiping out half life in the universe and allowing Thanos to escape. [Avengers - Infinity War]

Stormbreaker was later called to him by Thor as he stared at Captain Marvel and tried to test her resolve. In addition, it was also Stormbreaker with which Thor very proudly cut off Thanos' arm along with the Infinity glove on Titan II a few days later. When Thanos also reported that he had destroyed the Infinity Stones, Thor cut off Thanos's head this time, following the tip Thanos gave Thor shortly before the decimation.

Five years later in 2023, during the final battle against Thanos on Earth, Thor fought simultaneously with Mjølnir and Stormbreaker and used them to great effect in battle. However, Thanos gained the upper hand and used storm breakers himself to almost tear Thor's chest open, as the thunder god had previously done with Thanos, which he did not succeed in the end. Thor continued to use Stormbreakers in battle to fend off the combined forces of the Outriders, Chitauri, and the Black Order. Stormbreaker is able to combine and strengthen Thor's powers. Since the weapon is made of Uru, it is almost indestructible and withstands the energy shots generated by the Infinity Stones and can even injure Thanos. The weapon is also capable of channeling dimensional energy and acting as a bifrost bridge, which is shown when Thor instantly teleports himself, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot to Wakanda.

Like Mjølnir before him, Stormbreaker can always return to Thor if he wants to. In addition, the weapon is very powerful and no enemy can resist it. Glowing with an otherworldly blue flame that crackles with electricity, she appears to have the ability to achieve a goal when Thor wants it.

Due to its larger size and mass, which has both the blade of an ax and the head of a hammer in its construction and is equipped with an elongated handle that allows the weapon to be wielded with two hands, it is a significantly more powerful melee weapon than Mjølnir. Eitri even went so far as to say that Stormbreaker is the most powerful weapon in Asgard history. As such, she is one of the few able to seriously injure Thanos, who fought against the combined might of Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Drax, Star-Lord, Mantis, and Nebula and only one Suffered a tiny scratch on the cheek. Thanos himself mocked Thor for not aiming at his head, suggesting that Stormbreaker would have been able to kill him instantly. Since this weapon was built by Eitri to withstand the Infinity Glove, the dwarf had enchanted the weapon with several properties that allowed storm breakers to exploit the weaknesses that Eitri had built into the glove.

  • In the comics, the gun was created by Odin as a weapon for Beta Ray Bill after he returned Mjølnir to Thor.
  • The MCU version of Sturmbrecher shares great similarities with Mjølnir from the Ultimate Universe.

Behind the scenes

  • When asked how Stormbreaker can overwhelm the power of the finished Infinity Glove, authors Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely point out that Eitri is responsible for his "dwarf magic": he made both items and created them so that Stormbreakers could was to defeat the glove.
  • In a Q&A with Collider, Joe and Anthony Russo answered a question about how Stormbreaker was able to withstand the power of all six Infinity Stones, answering that it was the greatest weapon ever made and Thanos didn't know what this weapon was and didn't know what he was struggling with at that moment.
