Painting for Beginners - First Steps, Tips and Tricks
Painting for beginners
Painting pictures is very easy - you just have to know how to get started. Learning to paint is often a seemingly difficult thing for beginners. This article explains how to get started painting. You will also find a few helpful tips and tricks that can make getting started with painting a lot easier.
Painting, but how?
Children can paint, just like that. They don't think about it, they just take what they find. The older you get, the bigger the hurdle becomes to just start painting. Why? Because painting is a matter of the head. Many beginners believe it is theirs hand who doesn't do what they want. But it is not so. Can you write her name? Then your hand can do everything that is needed for painting. Painting is a matter of the head, and who wants to learn to paint, he has to be ready for it in his head.
Painting is very easy!
It's really easy: take a piece of paper and any pen and start working. Draw a few zigzag lines, an arch, and another arch. Paint an irregular shape. Or try to paint like a child. Just let the pen or brush run. Let your hand draw, freely and without any guidelines. Simply in such a way that it is physically fun and mentally relaxing. Don't try to paint realistically - even if that's your goal. You don't learn to paint realistically as a beginner, but as an advanced one. But to learn, you have to get to this stage first. Be free and enjoy the vibrancy of color.
Don't go overboard
Do not try to paint a masterpiece. Learning to paint often fails because of one's own expectations. Do not undertake too much. Let the color run free. Painting for beginners also means being humble. If you put yourself under pressure, painting will fail, especially for beginners.
Always start over
Paint a picture
Especially at the beginning you shouldn't "bite into" a picture. If you don't know what's next, end this sheet. Start a new picture, just as free and easy. Learning to paint always includes looking at what you have done afterwards. And the more sheets you can look at at the end of the afternoon or evening, the faster and more effectively you will learn to paint.
As simple as possible!
As I said: mastering the hand is the smallest problem. It is much more important to get your head on track in order to be able to follow your own creativity. Don't burden yourself with unnecessary technical bells and whistles. Mastering the watercolor technique requires years of practice with watercolors.
Start with an oil painting set?
I would advise against it. Painting for beginners means finding joy in painting. Oil painting is a huge mess in itself. Sorry :-) The colors stink and are unhealthy. You need solvents that stink a lot more and are just as unhealthy. You need rags, paint is constantly spilling - or you have to discipline yourself so that the joy of painting cannot develop at all. Hence the advice: Beginners shouldn't paint with oil paint at first.
Start with watercolors
Water colors, for example a school shower box or a watercolor set for beginners, are much easier to use. You can paint on paper. The paintings dry much faster and are much easier to store. Collect your works in a drawer or in a folder.
Beginner equipment for the first steps in painting
Before you start: set up three glasses of water: one to roughly wash out the paints of the brushes, one to remove the fine traces of paint, and the third should always have clear water. With this water they go into the colors.
Colors: red yellow blue green ...
Get 5 brushes: 3 medium-sized, approx. 12th size, and a fine one, but not too small so that you don't get frayed. And the third one should be really big, about 2 -3 cm wide. To begin with, try to hold three or four brushes in your hand and take turns painting with theirs. Take a brush for red / purple / orange, one for money, and one for blue / green. Never mix this brush into the other colors. The colors in your pictures will shine right from the start. A common mistake made by beginners is to turn the colors gray by mixing through the box with just a brush that never really gets washed out. It won't work.
Important: good paper
I did say: as simple as possible. This also includes: as inexpensively as possible. Because you should never be afraid of the price of the material. The failure of an image is part of the artistic, creative process. So: everything as simple as possible. You should only take a closer look at paper. Because it is terribly annoying when you paint with watercolor and the cheap printer paper immediately curls.
get sturdy paper from a specialist dealer that is suitable for watercolor painting. My tip: about 150 grams, as cheap as possible.
What do you want?
Self-portrait in the rain
At the beginning you shouldn't spend too long on a picture. Try to paint on a picture for a maximum of 20 minutes. Then start the next one. When you have painted a few pictures and have enough for the day, take another look at all the pictures. If possible, hang them next to each other on a wall with needles. And think about which one you particularly like. Why is that? Try to find out what drives you. Why do you want to paint? What do you want to achieve? Are you striving for recognition? Paint for yourself, to relax. Or do you actually paint to impress others.
Conclusion: painting for beginners
When it comes to “painting for beginners”, two things are important: the playful use of the material and the clarification of the path in which one would like to develop. More on that later…
If you want to paint realistic pictures, you should perhaps read this article first: "Drawing or painting realistically requires learning to see". And if you want to start with oil paint (maybe because you were given an oil painting set as a gift), but cannot make progress, you can try this:. "Finger painting: paint oil painting with your fingers".

And if all of this seems too much and technically too complicated to get started, you can start with “painting by numbers”.
